چکیده

Extending previous work (Albrecht & Kegel 1987, Kegel et al. 1993, Piehler & Kegel 1994), we investigated the formation of interstellar molecular lines in a medium with stochastic density and velocity fluctuations. We solved the full NLTE– problem, i.e. the generalized radiative transfer equation simultaneously with the rate equations, for a 6–level CO molecule and a plane-parallel slab geometry. Our results indicate that accounting for a finite correlation length of both, the density and velocity field, strongly affects the line profile and the line width as well as the intensity ratios of different rotational transitions.

Non-LTE radiative transfer in clumpy molecular clouds

We present some results of the simulation of radiative transfer in clumpymolecular clouds. For this study we have developed a program that can be used to calculate the observed molecular line profiles with one–, two– and three-dimensional model clouds. The three-dimensional models enable us to study the effect of small-scale density fluctuations on the observed molecular emission lines. The den...

Star Formation in Turbulent Molecular Clouds

Recent progress in the understanding of star formation is summarized. A consistent picture is emerging where molecular clouds form with turbulent velocity fields and clumpy substructure, imprinted already during their formation. The clouds are initially supported by supersonic turbulence which dissipates however within massive clumps on short timescales, of order their local dynamical timescale...

Supersonic Turbulence in the Perseus Molecular Cloud

We compare the statistical properties of J=1→0 CO spectra observed in the Perseus Molecular Cloud with synthetic J=1→0 CO spectra, computed solving the non–LTE radiative transfer problem for a model cloud obtained as solutions of the three dimensional magneto–hydrodynamic (MHD) equations. The model cloud is a randomly forced super–Alfvénic and highly super–sonic turbulent isothermal flow. The p...

Molecular Gas Structure around an Agn with Nuclear Starburst: 3-d Non-lte Calculations of Co Lines

We have performed three-dimensional, non-LTE (non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium) radiative transfer calculations for CO and CO lines, applying them to our high-resolution hydrodynamic models of the ‘torus’ around a supermassive black hole in an active galactic nucleus. The hydrodynamic simulations reveal inhomogeneous and turbulent gas structure on a sub-pc scale in a circum-nuclear starburst...

The cooling of atomic and molecular gas in DR 21

Aims. We present an overview of a high-mass star formation region through the major (sub-)mm, and far-infrared cooling lines to gain insight into the physical conditions and the energy budget of the molecular cloud. Methods. We used the KOSMA 3m telescope to map the core (10 ′ × 14 ′) of the Galactic star forming region DR 21/DR 21 (OH) in the Cygnus X region in the two fine structure lines of ...
